LVN Respite for higher-acuity cases.

LVN respite is in-home respite delivered by a Licensed Vocational Nurse instead of a non-medical respite worker. It exists for the families whose loved ones can't safely be left with a sitter — the cases other agencies decline.

If you've ever called a respite agency and been told "we don't take clients with a trach" or "we can't administer medications" — that's the line LVN respite crosses. A Licensed Vocational Nurse can legally and competently handle the parts of your loved one's care that a non-medical respite worker simply isn't licensed to touch.

That includes tracheostomy care and suctioning, G-tube feeds and medication administration, seizure response per protocol, insulin and complex medication regimens, and the kind of medical observation that catches a problem before it becomes a hospital visit.

The gap we fill

Between a babysitter and a nurse you can't afford.

Standard respite is staffed by trained workers who can do a lot — but not the medical pieces. Private-duty skilled nursing is staffed by RNs and LVNs but often costs out of reach without insurance coverage. Regional-Center-funded LVN respite sits between. It's the answer for families who've been told the other tiers don't fit.

Conditions our LVNs are built for

These are the cases we see most often. If your loved one's situation isn't on this list, we'll have a clinical conversation about fit at intake.

Tracheostomy / suctioning G-tube feeding & meds Seizure disorders & protocols Complex medication regimens Insulin / diabetes management Cerebral palsy with medical needs Medically fragile pediatric Adults with DD & medical complexity

How to request LVN respite through your Regional Center

If LVN respite is the right tier for your loved one, your NLACRC or Lanterman Service Coordinator can authorize it through your IPP. You have the right to request a specific vendored provider — ask for Choice Home Healthcare Services by name (Vendor# HL0948, Service Code 854). Your coordinator sends us the authorization, we call you for intake within one business day, and most placements happen within 72 hours.

"Our nurse showed up the second day knowing every detail of our son's seizure protocol. We hadn't even told her — Choice had. That's the difference."
Personal · CNA / HHA

Home Health Aides for the everyday.

Trained home health aides supporting personal care, daily living, mobility, and supervision for NLACRC and Lanterman consumers across the SFV and Greater LA. Steady, kind, consistent — the same caregiver, every visit.

For most families served by NLACRC or Lanterman, the day-to-day work of caring for a loved one isn't medical — it's logistical, physical, emotional, and unrelenting. Helping someone get dressed in the morning. Getting them to the table for lunch. Making sure they're safe in the shower. Keeping them company. These hours add up, and they're exactly what home health aide services exist to support.

What our HHAs provide

  • Personal care — bathing, grooming, dressing, oral hygiene, toileting
  • Mobility support — transfers, repositioning, ambulation assistance
  • Meal support — preparation, feeding assistance, hydration monitoring
  • Light housekeeping — laundry, dishes, tidying spaces the client uses
  • Supervision & companionship — staying with the client to ensure safety, conversation, presence
  • Errands and accompaniment — to appointments, community activities

Who we typically support

HHAs serve the day-to-day needs of consumers across the developmental disability spectrum and across age groups. Common diagnoses we work with:

Autism Spectrum Disorder Down Syndrome Cerebral palsy Intellectual disability Pediatric & adult care Adults with DD aging at home Behavioral support (non-medical) Recovery after injury or surgery

What HHAs don't do

Home health aides are non-medical. They're trained, certified, and supervised — but they can't legally administer medications, perform clinical procedures (G-tube feeds, suctioning, wound care), or provide the medical oversight a license is required for. If your loved one's care plan needs those, you're in LVN respite territory, not HHA.

Not sure which level fits?

We'll help you think it through.

If you're unsure whether HHA support or LVN respite is the right tier, call us. We can't authorize either — that's between you and your NLACRC or Lanterman Service Coordinator — but we can talk through what each tier covers and help you frame the conversation.

Bilingual when it matters

Greater LA and the Valley are deeply multilingual. We staff bilingual HHAs in Spanish, Armenian, Korean, and Mandarin/Cantonese when available. Tell us at intake what language your loved one is most comfortable with — we'll match accordingly whenever our roster allows.

Rehabilitative therapy

Progress, measured at home.

Home is where people move more, speak more, and feel safest trying new things. That's why our therapists deliver care right where life happens — turning every familiar room into a practice space.

Three disciplines. One goal: more independence, every week.

Request a therapy evaluation
PT

Physical Therapy

Mobility, strength, balance, and pain management. Reclaim movement — one step, stretch, or transfer at a time.

OT

Occupational Therapy

The skills of daily living — dressing, eating, self-care, fine motor work. Support for independence in the activities that matter most.

ST

Speech Therapy

Speech, language, swallowing, and cognitive-communication support. For children developing and adults recovering alike.

About NLACRC & Lanterman

The North Los Angeles County Regional Center (NLACRC) serves consumers across the San Fernando, Santa Clarita, and Antelope Valleys.

The Frank D. Lanterman Regional Center (FDLRC) serves consumers in Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, La Cañada, La Crescenta, Eagle Rock, Hollywood/Wilshire, and Central LA.

We're vendored with both under Service Code 854, Vendor# HL0948.

If your loved one is already a Regional Center consumer, your Service Coordinator is the person who authorizes services through your Individual Program Plan (IPP). You have the right to choose your vendored provider — ask for Choice by name.

Not yet a Regional Center consumer? Start with eligibility through nlacrc.org or lanterman.org — we're not part of eligibility determination, but once authorization comes through, we're ready.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions.

Answers to the questions families and Service Coordinators ask us most often.

What is LVN respite care?

LVN respite is in-home respite delivered by a Licensed Vocational Nurse rather than a non-medical respite worker. It's authorized for clients whose care needs go beyond what a non-medical worker is licensed to handle — including tracheostomy care, G-tube feeding, seizure protocols, and complex medication administration. Through NLACRC and Lanterman, LVN respite is funded for eligible families.

How do I request Choice as our Regional Center provider?

Tell your NLACRC or Lanterman Service Coordinator you'd like to use Choice Home Healthcare Services. Reference our vendor number (HL0948) and Service Code 854. Your coordinator sends us the authorization electronically, and we'll call you for intake within one business day. You can also call us first at (818) 465-5279 and we'll walk you through the conversation.

What's the difference between LVN respite and home health aide services?

LVN respite is provided by Licensed Vocational Nurses for clinically complex cases requiring nursing oversight — medication administration, tracheostomy care, G-tube feeds, seizure response. Home health aide services are non-medical personal care and daily living support — bathing, dressing, mobility, supervision, companionship. The two address different needs and are authorized through different categories in your IPP.

What areas does Choice serve?

We serve NLACRC and Lanterman Regional Center consumers within a 50-mile radius of Sherman Oaks. That includes the San Fernando Valley (Sherman Oaks, Encino, Tarzana, Woodland Hills, Northridge, Van Nuys, North Hollywood, Studio City, Chatsworth, Sylmar), Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Eagle Rock, Hollywood/Wilshire, Central LA, the Santa Clarita Valley, and the Antelope Valley.

We do not currently serve clients of other Regional Centers.

How fast can Choice place a caregiver?

Most cases are staffed within 72 hours of receiving Regional Center authorization. Higher-acuity LVN respite cases requiring specific clinical credentials may take longer because we won't put a generalist into a specialized case. We give you a realistic timeline within one business day of intake and keep you and your Service Coordinator updated.

Will the same caregiver come to every visit?

That's how we schedule by default. Your primary caregiver is the same person at every visit, with a small backup pool you'll be introduced to in advance for vacation or illness coverage. Continuity is the single biggest factor in long-term success, and we build our scheduling around primary-caregiver assignment rather than rotating coverage.

Can we request a specific caregiver?

Yes — and we encourage it. If you've worked with one of our caregivers before and want them back, ask for them by name. If you have language, gender, or cultural preferences, tell us at intake. The single biggest factor in a successful long-term arrangement is caregiver fit, and we schedule with that in mind.

What if we're already with another agency?

You have the right to switch providers. Ask your NLACRC or Lanterman Service Coordinator about transferring your authorization to Choice — the process is administrative and usually takes a few business days. You don't lose authorized hours, and there's no penalty for switching.

Do you serve consumers from other Regional Centers?

We are vendored with both NLACRC and Lanterman (FDLRC) Regional Centers. We do not currently take cases from Eastern LA, San Gabriel/Pomona, Harbor, or other Regional Centers. If your loved one is served by one of those centers, we're not the right provider — we can sometimes help point you toward an agency that is.

How much does this cost our family?

For NLACRC and Lanterman consumers with authorized hours, services are funded directly by the Regional Center at DDS-set rates. Your family does not pay out of pocket. The exception is the Family Cost Participation Program (FCPP) and Annual Family Program Fee (AFPF), which apply to certain services and certain income levels — these are administered by your Regional Center, not by us.
